Amazing "Southwest" Marquetry Banding Strips by Buffard Frères (Inlay-48)Description
Offered here is likely the last to be seen Marquetry Banding from the famed late nineteenth and early twentieth century French maker
Buffard Frères
.
The firm was a victim of the Great Depression and went out of business in the 1930's.
Any commercially available Frères bandings were last
seen when Lee Valley made their wareroom find of
materials in 1989. Alas, no more to be had from them, they sold their last long ago.
But, now available to you one of the few remaining examples.
The laid-up block (log) was acquired from France in 1980 through Hoppe Imports along with dozens of others that we are also offering.
Not at all sure this was meant to be a southwest indian inspired banding, but it looks it to me.
Banding specifics:
1-1/4" wide
Approx. 38" of usable length
1/25"+ thickness
Woods appear to be walnut, holly, rosewood, sycamore, mahogany, dyed pear
Traditional workmanship - face cut grain throughout
The woods used are likely now aged 100+ years
So bid on these and add a bit of woodworking history to your next project. And better hurry we've not much left either.
